Carruth suspended

To be fair, being 'woke' is something we should all aspire to be. Woke means being aware and sympathetic of societal issues. It's only recently that a section of society have successfully adopted the term to reference those that care about things that are (what used to be called 'wooly' or 'hippy') against their own views.

Perfect example: a societal issue that involves a minority, or persecuted/oppressed section of society is domestic violence - massive issue back in the day (Little Mo and that Trevor fella etc). So is domestic violence a woke issue? Does being against wife beating make me woke?

Happy to be labelled woke in that case.

Is it woke to be against racism? Or is it woke to try and treat people with dignity?

Or has 'wokeness' been adopted as the successor to 'political correctness'.....

Being woke is being nice. Being 'anti-woke' by extension (if we look at the above example) means you (not referring to any individual poster) probably supported Trevor when he was beating 7 bells out of Little Mo.

Most people (I think) don't hate many other people. They don't hate the opposite sex or people who are a different colour or religion. At least I like to think so. The weaponisation of the term woke is another tool for dividing the masses so we hate people who haven't hurt us and ignore the people who are messing up our lives ....

Bloke down the street from me, goes to his synagogue, goes to work, pays his taxes, his kids go to school...his family are great and they contribute to our society. But he's different from me in the eyes of some people so I should hate him? Should be afraid of him?

Sorry for a little lecture out of my system there.
Only a woke person would write that ;):D:D.
‘Woke’ means you’re able to be offended by absolutely everything.

When the word 'woke' was first featured in dictionaries 7 or 8 years ago, the definition was as Devils86 quoted.
However, since then I believe it has been hijacked somewhat (by both the loony left and the far right) and evolved into something more pejorative.
Many people become afraid to 'air' their opinion or voice any criticism for fear of being 'labelled' as intolerant etc. etc… in many cases it just appears to be the 'tail wagging the dog!'

Now this is becoming a very educational forum.
I have just looked up the meaning of ‘pejorative’.
No ,I won’t tell you. Look it up yourself! Haha

To continue the slight digression away from the main thread topic, how 'woke' has been appropriated is a bit like if, over the next couple of years, calling someone "a nice bloke" came to be taken as meaning that he was a thoroughly unpleasant character. Language does evolve over time (historically more gradually than in the current world), but it does get confusing when meanings are turned completely on their head.

Thinking about that analogy, for those who remember the Tim Nice-But-Dim character, it wouldn't have been too much of a stretch for a casual interpretation, ignoring the 'but', to lead to nice = dim, so a nice bloke would now mean a dim bloke. Probably why some people keep calling me 'nice'.

Back on topic, it could be that suspension while investigating is standard league and/or club policy if a complaint is raised (I don't know if a complaint was made). It would certainly operate that way in professions like teaching, medicine or legal, though I appreciate that the potential for further damage to be done if a complaint is not acted upon in that way can be much more serious in those other walks of life.

In terms of the rights and wrongs of the case, I don't have enough info to comment. All I've seen is the club's statement, a bunch of 3rd/4th/5th-hand hearsay on 'X' and a video clip that, in isolation, doesn't show much at all. Some of the best witnesses will be the other players who also went through that door 8 times that evening. Players will be held to different standards than fans, but fans should also behave themselves in a reasonable way, so, hopefully, the investigation will be quick, but will also look at all aspects and come to a sensible conclusion.

Somewhat warping the thread again, I do like the sporting attitude of our crowd. Some fan bases (even the 'best fans in Europe') habitually boo opposition teams and see not booing as some sort of lack of commitment. After our home games, those who haven't already made a dash for their cars usually clap the opposition off the ice and I don't think I've witnessed first hand any nasty personal abuse. It's possibly an extension of rugby culture, or maybe everyone is just too 'nice' where I sit.

There are exceptional situations, like Storm after Ulett's attack on Barrow, but then they thoroughly deserved to be booed as loudly as we could manage.

completely disagree , being woke , is being none tolerant of others and not being able to compromise , and not being able to except people are different, and the killing of free speech and defence of once person .being woke is they can do and say what they want and your not allowed to defend your self. if i was carruth id leave the club and i dont blame him ,if this was football this decision would be end of the premiership. it would be impossible to play any games.
This is not the original definition of ‘woke’ (the clue is in the word) but it’s the definition a section of the intolerant right have put on it. Being anti-woke has historically been seen as being intolerant and against anything that is designed to promote equality of opportunity.

So in parts of social media your definition is exactly what people have taken from woke but …. It’s really not the actual definition.

Thank you to @Devils86 for pointing this out as it’s one of my bugbears when people get it wrong. Normally these people are also telling people ‘you can’t say anything nowadays’, whilst telling everyone exactly what they think

Ironic that people are telling me what it means and then proving my point that the word has been hijacked.

My apologies for taking the thread off topic. I'll stick to hockey, I'd forgotten how most people are.

Personally can't wait for this season to be over.

Agreed. It's out of control now. It's PC on steroids

in regards of Carruth, i believe at the very most the club should just have given a player fine, for miss conduct anything else is overreaction.
i fear we may lose him now, i hope this club is not on a trend going forward down a woke road
