Latest on injuries?

I know there’s a lot of discussion on getting some injury cover in. The new roster regulations this year are really constrictive.

Details on this from the league is very sketchy and there hasn’t been any update from the league for over a month, but from what I can deduce (this might well be incorrect) we have signed 6 Brits and 17 imports as definitive signings (23 total) and currently have one of those players (an import) on the IR list with Taz signed as injury cover for this player. I am suggesting the officially unnamed injured player is Maxim Duve as he was on our opening roster.

Without knowing the extent of Riley’s injury from today yet, it seems none of our other injured players will be out for more than 90 days, so none have been placed on the IR list so far meaning none can be covered by an IR cover signing.

Bayley Harewood doesn’t count towards our roster yet, and won’t do unless he plays a 20th game for us.

Remembering that the maximum number of signings in the season is 25 in total, and we must not have more than 18 imports signed at any one time.

So we have 2 slots left on our roster for this season, in addition to any future IR cover signings.

But we currently have 17 imports on our active roster - Taz has replaced (presumably) Duve.

So we can currently only add one more import with the squad as it is.

Beyond signing a single import, the options we have are:

1). to play short until we get players back

2). use more two-ways

3). place one of our currently injured imports onto the IR list and rule them out for 90 days in order to sign an IR cover

4). cut one of our imports in order to use the 25th slot

5). sign an additional Brit

6). appeal to the EIHL Standards Committee, like Fife, to be allowed to sign more imports.

Can anyone think of any other creative ideas about other solutions?

I've assumed that the new overall limit of 25 and the 90 day IR period are intended to encourage greater use of 2-way players to help develop future GB players, but most clubs don't seem to be able to access their 2-ways sufficiently easily at the moment.
if I understand correctly, in the NHL and other higher level leagues, fringe and junior players are contracted to the senior team and loaned downwards to their farm team's when not needed. Steelers may be closer to that than the other EIHL clubs given their close relationship with the Steeldogs, but the rest of the EIHL teams currently seem only to be able to use 2-ways on relatively rare occasions when the NIHL teams can spare them.
I would expect the 2-way relationships and arrangements to evolve over the next couple of years, but is that a fair description of the current state, or am I misunderstanding?

Again, I think you are spot on with your analysis of the roster situation and options for bolstering the team. I can't think of any others and I guess Belfast guard their laptop algorithm more closely than the Coca Cola recipe.

I certainly hope we get a fresh import asap (given visa lead time etc.), but beyond that I suspect it will be a case of coping as best we can. Fournier will be back for the next game and ZOB back, feeling OK and firing on all cylinders soon, hopefully. MacWilliam's and Brandt's injuries are now the big unknowns and could be crippling, but if they are both back soon I think we'll be OK.

So O,brien back plus Fournier great news, Todd also announces we are actively talking to a few players and hoping for more news soon, hopefully the rumoured Isaac Johnson will be one. So again this great club comes back with positive news and the aim of proving all will be done to keep this great club where it should be, at the top. Thanks guys.

I think you are right. Looking at our 2 way players it appears Harewood is seen as the next in line, however despite being only 9F and 5D he logged one shift for a grand total of 38 seconds TOI against both Guildford and Coventry at home, possibly as a result of him being -3 away at Coventry a few days earlier? I suspect he wasn’t in the line up at Guildford as Bristol were playing and he would have probably logged 20+ mins for Bristol as opposed to potentially zero for us. Hard to make a case for us having first call on someone when they log pretty much zero minutes.

I like harewood but pistol Pete sees him more than us, good chance he doesn’t think he’s ready , actions speak louder than words , be interesting next pre season to see if he finally steps up

So the rumour I heard last week that Johnson was joining us was unfortunately just that, a rumour.
Would have been a great addition when we desperately need reinforcements.

This team has shown remarkable character and resilience playing so short handed in recent weeks but
I’m afraid without returnees or reinforcements these next couple of weeks could define our season!
Fingers crossed for a regulation win for both ourselves and Sheffield tonight!

Based entirely on the Devils injury updates provided recently, we’re looking roughly at the following timescales for player return:

MacWilliam - likely next weekend - Glasgow/Manchester
Barrow - potentially Conti Cup weekend at the earliest or the following Fife/Belfast weekend
Bowns - potentially next weekend or the Conti Cup weekend
Davies - potentially earliest is Fife/Belfast weekend at the end of January, but could be out until early/mid Feb.
Shinkaruk - potentially mid to end February - maybe Belfast weekend?
Brandt - no news
