OK, some help and patience required

Hi all!

Firstly can I just say if this is in the wrong area please move also if this kind of thing has been asked before I apologise.

A recent post about vocal newbies (no it wasn't me, I'm a girl) had me thinking and chuckling as I was recently sat next to a new comer who sounded as equally vocal.

Ive been a fan for about 3 years (well longer but attending games since 2013) and while there is a ton of stuff on NHL rules etc I struggle to find any about the EIHL league.

OK so I know/assume the rules are similar across the board but I still get stuck on things and could use help in finding where I can read up on or watch videos which might explain these things better. its frustrating as hell to be sat watching a game and not fully understand why play has stopped and face off is in certain areas. (for example)

I was fortunate to be sat behind a lovely group of people and a lady who when I struggled to answer a question posed by my step son turned and answered it for me explaining and making that part of the game easier to understand. for that I thank you, genuinely. (not sure if she is on here or would remember me though)

I understand most things now by the way but could do with somewhere to refer to so I can brush up my knowledge.

I would say be kind at this point but I'm not opposed to some good natured banter.

True, I meandered a bit off point there.

Icing stopping play is one thing I get stuck on. Sometimes a player does it and it's fine other times play is stopped. why? what am I missing?

It would be great to have a "Hockey Rules 101" part of the Inferno forum for this kind of stuff. We are attracting lots of new fans at the moment and I am sure these guys find their way to The Inferno pretty quickly as Wolfgirl has.

Please....explain in plain language..... the face off rules for example! :)

You're right about elite league website, searching for the word rules came up with these

http://eliteleague.co.uk/dops-faqs/
http://eliteleague.co.uk/overview/

This one's maybe too detailed, the entire IIHF rule book, where you can see definitions of all penalties, and plenty more

http://www.iihf.com/iihf-home/sport/iihf-rule-book/

Want to know what Andrew Lord does?
Read this and you too can be an armchair coach, probably one of the more knowledgeable!

As you say there's plenty of stuff out there, ask the right question and google will find it, such as

Hope that helps

The elite rules aren't that different than the American leagues so I'm sure there are some good instructional videos out there on YouTube to explain the intricacies. dave is a good person to ask as he's a former official and probably has forgotten more rules than most of us know. As for icing in particular the Elite uses hybrid icing so if a defending player gets to their defensive zone hash marks (inside the face off circles) before the attacking player, or it's obvious that the puck isn't being particularly chased by an attacking player, the Lino will whistle icing. The exception is if a lino thinks a defending player is being leisurely chasing down the puck (delaying tactics) they can wave off the icing call. Oh and icing is allowed by a short handed team on a penalty kill as well.

Thanks all for the replies.

James and youngbob thank you for those links and the explanation, it makes that particular thing clearer now.

I have picked up a lot watching the livestream and lurking on here but sometimes out right asking is more helpful.

By no means do I want to be an arm chair coach though lol

Ok so next question..assuming the icing call happens down one or the other end of the ice why is it taken in centre ice sometimes?

The last part is to run the clock down on the penalty yeah? the short handed team use it to hinder a scoring chance by the team on pp? (that's what I thought anyway lol)

So the next time we see players cry about icing spare a thought for the linos trying to explain it to them [emoji15]

The face off will be taken centre ice if one of the linesman has made a mistake and the referee has spotted it. an incorrect icing call is taken to centre ice to make it most fair to the two teams.

I've never criticised a referee, it's a very difficult job. You'll be surprised how many players get it wrong, sometimes they do something wrong for the simple reason they believed was within the rules. It occasionally gets called out by the crowd, eventually the newbie shouting may get a comment right.

It's a complicated game to explain in written form, get and keep it to the basics, then the more complicated rules may make sense in time.

It's a great question to ask and maybe the Devils own website could have a dedicated page for rules of the game or on the inferno, you may want to drop them an E-mail or message Steve as one thing there looking for is ideas and suggestions.

They have had the basics on there in the past, that and the hand signals have been printed occasionally in the programmes. It's good to remind people. I can't remember which team does it (Nottingham perhaps) but showing the hand signals along with penalty graphics is good as you learn them and can then see what the ref is calling on the ice

I did drop a line to icetime as they have been looking for ideas but I will send one to the Devils as well as it would be a handy section to put in the programme :) I found a page on EIHL about hand signals so have also bookmarked that page

Cheers all

Wolfgirl where do you sit at games. No problem popping over to help or explain any answers to any questions you have during warm up of a game. The centre ice one Gazza is bang on with. Or just add to here and someone will answer. I may correct them a couple of times but cardiff does have a very educated fanbase. We used to do rule of the week in the programme.
