I did pretty well on NHL 15 but have stopped playing due to the "pay-to-win" aspect of it. EA reward you 100X more for paying a bit of money than for being skilled at the game. I once played a guy who had Datsyuk, Gretzky, Crosby, (you name it, he had it) and I was playing with 3rd and 4rth line NHL'ers. I outshot him 50 to 7 in the game overall, had the majority of puck possession and he beat me 1:0 on a wrister from the blue line, no screen or anything. Started playing the EAIHL game mode after that, wayyyyy more fun and fair.
Using real money to buy packs is an advantage but far from essential. Just buy a pack per week at £2.89 a time or, if not, work around it. Firstly, look for bargain players and don't look at just overall rating. Kutcherov is a great player to have and costs around 1700 pucks. Make him your C and he can play 1st line. Chara on D is relatively cheap. Galchenyuk is another good cheap player. Chemistry is important too. Have all D and netminder playing for same team if poss, same as each individual line. Buy and use the coach who gives plus 2 to all stats. Only boost your goalie, nobody else.
Outscoring someone 50 to 7 and losing 1.0 is frustrating but nothing else. The best way to score is with one timers across the crease. Go behind the net to confuse the opponent. Protect the puck as often as poss too.
My record is. 30 - 10 - 1
