Will Channel 8 be a platform for hockey?

With the announcement today of 21 regional TV channels being launched on Channel 8 of Freeview (well sent out for consultation), and Cardiff being listed as getting one of the Channels - what could this mean for prime time hockey coverage?

Hockey would be an ideal product, even in just a highlights format - and would make it to every home, not just Sky subscribers. Talk about ready made weekend Primetime viewing to rival x-factor.

one word.... sky

due to them having the rights i doubt it will happen, im sure this plays a big part to why we don't get any T.V coverage as we have to pay for clips longer than 30 seconds.

Surely we own our rights, and sell usage of the rights to a broadcaster?

You would hope that this period wouldn't be longer than the period for these channels to be setup? It'll take a couple of years.

Unless we have literally sold the rights for the EIHL for the lifetime of the league.

channel M failed in Manchester, and I enjoyed the pheonix games they showed.

Problem with local TV in this country is that, compared to north america, we do not have the millions of people in a channels locale - well we did til ITV decided it did not want that anymore.

We need ITV regions back as their are or were "affiliates" of the ITV network just as channels are affiliated to ABC CBS or CTV etc. That is the only way it will work.

Wouldn't the league negotiate the deal for the coverage rather than at individual club level ?

As for regional TV all I can imagine is some kind of horrific local X Factor.. probably in Welsh as well

The league could negotiate with the channels. We don't know what the model looks like yet, but it sounds like there will be some central oversight - and there is the chance to build a package and sell it into the channels on mass.

I say sell - it would probably have to be give. But there is the chance for TV time outs, and proper commercialisation of live games and the advertising of the highlights show.

Where I think the current proposal may work where other attempts since ITV went mad imploded - the inclusion on FreeView. Suddenly every home will have it, and on a high number. It wont be hidden with the porn and shopping channels in the Virgin basement.
