Tougher covid restrictions - risk to hockey?

Question is whether 1,300 at Bristol would be financially viable. How many ST holders do we have? If they all went then there would be no extra ticket sales revenue and you're left surviving on food and drink...and thats without expenses like rink hire etc
would need something to make up the short fall
Thinking out loud, would a potential for streaming make up for a potential shortfall?

Its a balancing act between what may be viable and what's going to give a return on any investment. Bristol is likely a realistic proposition, and even psychologically feels like a stones throw away for many fans.

While swindon has the greater capacity, would as many fans be willing to make a journey?

Some real tough decisions to be made quickly.

Seems promising the club have been asked to play a specified number of games behind closed doors. Obviously dependant on many factors external to the devils

I would say playing at IAW and selling a lot more webcasts would be much more financially viable. As someone else has said, playing in a smaller rink leaves no room for extra ticket sales, and there will be extra rink/staff costs involved.

If they charged £20 for the home streams it might be doable, not sure how many people actually stream games though

So as it stands devils can play at blaze 26th Dec in front of fans then play at home on 27th v blaze no fans., think Scotland will follow the welsh restrictions as well.

If I were Todd I’d be finding out whether the full cost of missing crowd revenue is going to be covered.
if it’s not then come together with owners from all welsh sports teams and all go ahead and play with crowds as normal. Omicron is coming regardless, hitting the sports fans isn’t going to stop it.

So are you saying start a rebellion?
It's not just hitting sports fans though is it, Nightclubs were first, now sports next I would think it will be concerts.
It's anywhere of large gathering of people really.
I think all the heads of uk should have agreed a 2 week winter break for all sports instead of played behind closed doors.

Yep. Of course the other issue here is that the various nations are all doing different things as well so any sporting league that embraces more than one country becomes a farce. A two week break for all would have been a far better option than the current shambles

Whilst I questioned the naivety of the Devils in handling BOC’s exit the flip side is this is where I have full confidence in Todd to navigate our way through this. He’s got pull and clout at EIHL board level a respected GM - I know he’ll do right by us. Previous ownership groups would be looking for the door here and protecting themselves.

Just out of curiosity even though the sporting events are now behind closed doors, could we all meet in a pub,
crowded around each other, standing room only and watch a live stream of the game and I can still go to my pantomime too?

Todd Kelman interview on Radio Wales this morning suggested that the Welsh Assembly Government would cover the cost of lost ticket sales and other sales for the two games.

The £3m set aside doesn't seem much. Hopefully this indicates this is a short term action. Full confidence in Todd to get the necessary work done and done well. The club is in good hands. Hope to join you all soon at a game, following the Christmas period.

As disappointing as it is to wake up to this announcement, it’s not really a surprise to anyone who has been following the data for the past couple of weeks.

London’s cases have been increasing at a frightening rate the past two weeks and sadly their hospital admissions are now increasing drastically too. They’re now at the highest level since the end of the 2nd wave a year ago and still increasing.

In Wales the increase in cases had been gradual and hospital admissions had been continuing to fall. However, Friday showed the first big increase in cases and yesterday the data for the weekend confirmed its continuing. Cardiff in particular had a big spike.

With traditional Christmas socialising these figures are only likely to increase further and without action Hospital admissions will be increasing too. And that’s without taking into account health care staff catching it and having to isolate.

With Westminster basically a government that has fallen there is very little the devolved governments can do without financial support from the Treasury. But throughout the pandemic large events have been shown to be super spreaders.
As soon as nightclubs were announced to be closing the writing was on the wall for us. 3000 people indoors? Only the biggest hockey fans could deny we’d be high risk.

I’m guessing there will be further restrictions announced in the coming days to hospitality and although we’ve heard nothing other than the official line many of us in education are assuming there will be some sort of staggered start to schools returning in January.

Hopefully the preemptive action here in Wales will mean the disruption will be kept to a minimum.

Can’t see club playing home games over the border as optically would be against the spirit of the regs. WAG would be justifiable angry if Welsh sports teams and fans were gathering to play home games in Bristol etc, as would completely negate the aim of the measure (reducing mass spreader events), when facing exponential spread of omicron. It’s pretty likely Jan Feb are going to be difficult to navigate with teams inevitably entering COVID protocols with increasing regularity.

If that’s true then that is massive for the club.

People will/are slating the WG for banning fans from two games but don’t forget we’ve already had two games cancelled because of Covid cases in other teams. Those games will have to be played midway in a congested fixture calendar which will almost certainly lead to a drop in income for the team.

Hopefully ourselves and Coventry will be able to go ahead with the games over Xmas, albeit the home one will be Streaming.
But with a week to plan for it the club might be able to run 50/50 and SOHB online. Instead of spending money on petrol/parking/food/drink let’s use that money we would have spent on getting the biggest 50/50 prize ever and a big cash boost for the club.
