I think it's too early in Doug's career to say that yet. He has (in EIHL terms) seemingly limitless wage resources and a fantastic venue and a team with a great profile thanks to his boss, TK.
Having the money to spend on the players you want is not a great recruiter, imo. It's a great shopper.
Great recruiters could consistently attract Top quality players to a bargain basement venue with often unattractive wages to offer. Great recruiters could bring players like Tyson Teplitsky, Phil Osaer, Craig Weller, Mark Smith, Scott Matxka, Max Birbraer and Wes Jarvis to a venue like the tent on nowhere near what other teams spend on high-profile (often non productive) superstars.
Great recruiters could see diamonds in the rough and get them on competitive packages, using their obvious ability and drive to give them the chance to become stars and cult heroes. Giving guys like Tylor Michel the chance to have consecutive career years, or seeing the numbers of a Jon Pelle (solid but not spectacular prior to the Devils) and combining him with other well-recruited players to allow him to develop into an offensive powerhouse (a position he thoroughly earned by being utterly brilliant for us).
It is quite possible Doug could mature into a great recruiter but I would not compare him to G and Franny - who I do obviously consider to be great recruiters based on their track record - until he has done it, and done it well, under pressure - for a solid 5 years plus.
As for Hoffman I think the League is better for him. He's big, tough, can score and is smart enough to know when to be physical and when to just play the game. I for one would be much happier if he wasn't in the lineup against us on Saturday.
