What would happen if the UK left the EU? Would it stay the same or just change to 14 imports?
This was raised a while ago on THF & the 2 answers that considered this were:
"It would affect the EPL and NIHL on imports because they currently don't allow players who need work permits so presumably if we left the EU then imports from those countries would need work permits to play here. If they then kept the same rules the only imports they could sign would be ones with a British passport.

This would be a dilemma for the EPL especially because they seem to want to keep the development league tag, which means no imports who need work permits. Either they allow imports who need work permits, or go with British dual national only imports, or no imports at all

Edit: The EIHL rules would change slightly as well because of the recently added however many imports have to be non-work permit or something" And

"If as suggested recently by HBSC and other economists, upon exit from the EU the value of the pound could drop dramatically even to 80's level.
British hockey clubs would no longer be able to afford or attract a better standard of import, the difference in value between the pound and dollar will be negligible. It's the difference in value today that makes British hockey attractive, no other reason. Imports follow the best money available for their standard.
Costs of flight's, ITC's and perhaps the overall costs of living will also be higher as imports of all commodities will cost more if the pound is devalued.
On the other hand if that scenario takes place it could force British leagues to drop their import levels and play more British players, but that could also force clubs to overpay for British players, supply and demand."

Great analysis of the In/Out debate. More rational than every politician I've heard ranking on!

The UK would take a minimum of 2 years, probably more, to exit the EU, so the work permit issue would be well down the track,Transitional arrangements would have be in place. The UK couldn't deport all the EU citizens working in the UK, some who have bought homes as well (or process 500,000 work permits) the following morning!

However, I'd not considered the value of the pound in relation to the pay of foreign nationals. To an import player we'd be offering peanuts (and, therefore, only attract monkeys!).

This would surely have a massive negative impact on the quality of EIHL hockey. The imports are rôle models for developing Brits. I'd bet our top Brits would have an import in mind who mentored them in their early careers. Could be the death of top-class hockey, making BizNasty's comments seem generous.
