The 4 Cardiff junior devils that travelled to Windsor, Ontario with the England u14 side to play in the Riverside Rangers 50th Annual International Tournament are enjoying phenomenal success.
Callum Buglass, Owen Griffiths, Tom Parkinson and Jack Randall flew out to Canada on Boxing Day and after a long flight and a 4 hour coach transfer they made it to their hotel late into the night. The squad were on the ice for a practice session at 8am the next morning followed later that day by their first tournament game versus Port Huron which they narrowly lost 2-1. Reports on the game suggested that the England team were the better of the two teams for the entire 2nd & 3rd periods but after finding themselves 0-2 after the first period couldn’t pull it back though the solitary England goal saw an assist go to the Devil’s Callum Buglass.
The next day (Dec 28th) saw the team playing tournament favourites, Windsor Spitfires, and helped by a goal from the Devil’s Tom Parkinson England won by 3-1. Yesterday (Dec29th) saw England scheduled to play 2 further tournament games. First against a Chatham Maroons team which helped by an assist from Tom Parkinson saw England run out 6-3 winners. Later that day England were to face host team, Riverside Rangers, and England secured a semi final place with a convincing 5-0 victory with a further goal again coming from Devil’s Tom Parkinson.
8.00am (Windsor, Ontario time) this morning saw the first semi final take place between Windsor Spitfires and England, a superb defensive display saw the England team narrowly edge out Windsor with a 1-0 win to secure their place in the final.
The tournament prestige cannot be understated. Riverside alumni and other participants in the tourney have included:
Joel Quennville, Russ Adams, Pat Boutette, Ron Friest, Nik Antropov and recent Windsor Spitfire draft choice, Richard Panik.
Last year they moved into their new home, The Windsor Family Credit Union Centre, home of the Windsor Spitfires. This is a new state of the art 4-pad facility with a main bowl with seating capacity in excess of 6000. It replaces the Riverside Memorial Recreation Centre and Arena that was the home of the tournament for 48 years.
