Devils 12 - 3 Streatham
Cardiff welcomed the Streatham Redskins for their second home game of the season, with the visitors hotly tipped to challenge at the top of the table this year after a host of big name summer signings.
The first period was a tight affair, with the redskins striking first but Cardiff immediately levelled despite being short handed. Stoney started and finished the play after playing a 1-2 with Scarborough. Osman then put the home side ahead but thy would go in on level terms after import Klima clinically tucked away a breakaway chance.
The devils came out flying in the second period and managed to notch up no fewer than 6 goals in an entertaining affair to which he Redskins could only muster1 reply. Armour struck first, before Osman added his second of the night. Scarboroough then found the top shelf over Skins keeper Sanderson's shoulder and Armour finished a superb sweeping move with a sublime toe drag then snap shot into the back of the net. Scarzy was proving o be in a menacing mood and found the net again before Lockwood opened his account for the game.
Third period and the game was well a truly in Cardiffs hands and Scarborough picked up his second hat trick of the season to make it 9-3. Not one to miss out on the scoresheet, Fisher then joined the party with a backhand top shelf effort. Osman then bagged a hat trick but would not even claim the man of the match on the night despite banking 3 + 2 as the imperious Scarborough finished up the scoring to end an evenings work with 4+ 4 to his name.
To complete the spectical that was entertaining throughout despite the final scoreline, Wilkinson and Skins 6ft 5 defence man had a two round bout. The two were dismissed to the penalty box after a short lived fight that failed to get going when Ross lost his footing, but the two decided they wanted to have a proper go and resumed as they returned to the ice from the bin. This time good old fashioned toe to toe scrap got the crowd very excited as the two heavy weights traded blows with Wilkinson edging the bout.
Invicta 3 - 6 Devils
Sunday and Cardiff's NIHL 1 side travelled to their age old rivals Invicta Dynamos. Despite being geographically opposite ends of the southern UK the encounters over the years have proved to be entertaining and feisty affairs on the ice to forge a strong rivalry that makes these games a highlight of the hockey calendar.
The Dynamos set their stall out early and it became immediately apparent what their game plan was. They came out very aggressive, hitting Cardiff at every opportunity. Some of it was clean, plenty of it wasn't. The Dynamos received plenty of pens but failed to bait the Devils into a scrap. Watchorn dangled the gloves on a few occasions but the Devils, including tough guy Wilkinson, were under strict orders and stuck to a game plan. Hockey was the winner in the first, as Cardiff raced into a 3-1 lead. Newton picked up his first for the club and Scarzy continued with his fine goal scoring form with a clever deflection past Wride in the Dynamos net. Fisher beat the glove side tucking away a rebound to mark a great start for the Devils. Invicta's goal came when they were short handed, where most of their best play seemed to come on the night.
Second period continued in the same manner, and Fisher doubled his tally for the night when he sniped from the offensive zone face off circle after playing a neat 1-2 with Newton in the corner. Scarzy then finished a sweeping move that started with a fake shot from Dixon on the blue, who found Osman in the slot, who committed players and goalie to open up Scarborough in close. Invicta's frustrations were showing and Watchorn epitomised the game in a crazy 20 seconds. Sedlak put in a clean check in the corner whilst forechecking, Watchorn then chased him and jumped him from behind and through a tirade of punches. Once again, Cardiff were not interested and as Sedlak lay on the floor not fighting, the punches continued to rain in on him. He was rightly thrown out and the Devils maintained the upper hand, now with a5 min power play to boot.
Third period and Invicta finally seemed to change their game plan. After seeing out the 5 min penalty, in which both Scarborough and Deacon went agonisingly close, the home side started to plan some smarter hockey. They had a long period of applied pressure and managed to pull 2 goals back to shift the momentum in their favour. Cardiff quickly called a time out and steadied their ship, soaking up the pressure and attacking on the break. With 4 mins to go Scarborough made the game safe by banking his 7th goal of the weekend and 3rd hat trick of the season, using his speed to round both Dynamo defenders and finish through the keepers five hole. An incredible win for the Devils which was superbly marshalled from the back, with Mike Brabon putting in an excellent performance.
