NIHL 1 Devils weekend roundup Streatham

14th Nov 2012 | Posted by Geraint Walters

Streatham Redskins 5-7 Cardiff NIHL Devils

Cardiff returned to Brixton Ice Arena, the scene of ‘the comeback’ where only 3 weeks ago they rescued a point by scoring 2 goals in the last 52 seconds. With some regular players missing the Devils again called upon the excellent youth system that has done Cardiff so proud over the years. As such 3 players under the age of 18 iced for the NIHL outfit, Jack Randall making his senior debut joining fellow youngsters Callum Buglass and Owen Griffiths who have both impressed previously this season. The dedication of these aspiring young talents can epitomised by the Cardiff team bus stopping at Bracknell on the way home to drop them off for Conference trials at 11pm.

The game was a fairly entertaining affair, with the exception of the 5 min delay before the 3rd period where the players had to gather on their respective bench’s to ‘wait for the ice to freeze’ following a rather wet ice cut. Cardiff raced into a 3-0 lead, with Warman registering his first goal for the club following his summer switch from Bristol when he shot home from the point through traffic. Sean Scarbrough scored a wonderful goal in his trademark fashion of using his speed to race past the defenceman caught flat footed after a change and finish neatly round the goal keeper. Then Owen Griffiths grabbed his first senior hockey goal with an excellent finish from the slot. It wasn’t quite all Cardiff’s way though, Brabon making a few tidy saves before being beaten twice before the break when Streatham struck back to keep the game tight. 3-2 end of the first.

Second period and Cardiff extended their lead through Deacon and Armour made it 5 before being ejected for a second 10 min major. Arms will feel hard done by as his first penalty was awarded for having words with a Redskin after a dirty boarding hit left Wilkinson down injured and the second when he celebrated his goal in front of his own bench but yelling ‘and what?’ back to Streatham’s in response to the abuse hurled his way the shift before hand. Having not laid a finger on an opposing player he somehow found himself taking an early shower. Streatham managed to get a powerplay goal to keep the game within touching distance at 5-3.

The final period came but there was to be no Cardiff like come back for the Redskins, as the Devils continued to dominate the game and ran out 7-5 winners. Scarbrough and Deacon both finished the game with a brace as Cardiff’s 1st line continued their impressive goal scoring form. A couple of deflected goals kept the scoreline respectable from a Streatham perspective but in reality it was a relatively comfortable victory for the Cardiff side. It was a happy return for Rupe Quinney playing for the first time against his former club since his move to Wales as part of a 2-way with the Elite set-up. It was not such a happy day for ex-Devil Phil Manny who despite finding himself on the losing side had the consolation of MoM beers for his side. Scarbrough once again taking the award for the Cardiff boys.
