NIHL 1 Devils weekend roundup 21/10

24th Oct 2012 | Posted by Geraint Walters

Cardiff NIHL Devils 4-4 Milton Keynes Thunder

The NIHL Devils managed to maintain their unbeaten run for another week, coming from behind to seal a point against an improving MK Thunder side.

After watching the first 5 mins of the game you would be forgiven expecting a large score to be run up on the visiting side. The Devils were permanently camped in side the MK end, looking lively and creating several good chances. Those chances were not being finished and this frustration would be a trend of the rest of the game. A combination of good goal keeping and below par finishing meant that the goals that should have come, did not.

As so often is the case in ice hockey, teams can be guilty of dropping their performance level to that which they are facing. MK came to the BBT knowing that they could not match the Devils for skill so looked to play a containing game, and it was largely effective. The Cardiff side only managing to edge ahead 1-0 by the end of the 1st period thanks to a neat finish from Osman.

Second period and the visiting side started to grow in confidence and created more attacking chances whilst continuing to dissolve any attacking threat provided by the Devils. They took the lead to stun the under-performing Cardiff side and headed into the final period with the score sitting at 3-2. Osman had again netted sticking in a rebound generated from a burst of pace out wide by import speedster Scarbrough.

The third period and the visitors continued in the same manner and again scored to increase their lead. As time ticked away the urgency increased from the home side as they looked to salvage something from the game, Powell reduced the deficit but time was short. As the Devils bench looked to be manoeuvring to send out an all attack system that worked so well the week before in Streatham, their plans had to change when Wilkinson miss timed a hit on Thunder player C Goode, adjudged to have catching the players knee. The 5 minute major meant that the Devils had to see the rest of the game on with 4 men, but they could not be content icing the puck to avoid being scored on, they needed a goal. Like the game before they came up with the goods late on to grab a draw from the jaws of defeat, Fisher feeding Osman who completed an excellent hat-trick to make the final score 4-4.

A well deserved man of the match award went to the young MK goal keeper, who faced 47 shots on the night
