Cardiff Devils U18s 7 Swindon Cougars 2

On Sunday 7th Oct, the Devils U18s squad were continuing with a great weekend for the Devils sides, with a great team effort beating local rivals Swindon Cougars 7-2 in the U18s A league South, to continue their 100% start to the season and send the team to first spot in the standings.

Coming off the back of a large 11-1 win the weekend before, the Devils entered the game full of confidence and that showed straight from the first face-off. Owen Griffiths and Zak Shanahan linking up early to force a good save from Jake Silvester in the Cougars goal. The Devils forced the pace of the game early on, and were rewarded with a their first at 2.54 when a nice pass from Ellis Price put through Zak Shanahan who finished with a shot over the keepers shoulder. The home team were on top of their visitors for several spells, but were unable to double their lead, as a few good chances were wasted and Silvester in goals made several good stops, to keep Swindon in the game at 1-0. At the other end of the rink, Swindon did manage to get some pressure on the break, and did manage to catch the Devils defence out and get a couple of odd man breaks only to see James Whiting in goal in top form, and commanding between the pipes. Both net minders keeping the score down to 1-0 at the end of the first period.

The second period saw the Devils come out and hit another gear as they effectively killed the game off in an eight minute spell. With Kieran Latchford sitting out a two minute penalty the Devils went on the penalty kill, and instead of sitting back under pressure out worked and hustled their guest forcing two turn-over’s which were both dispatched to the back of the Cougars net. First of all Shanahan stripped the puck off a Swindon Defenseman skating out of the zone, and went in alone to finish. And then 33 seconds later the Devils again forced a turn over and this time Shanahan turned provider as Owen Griffiths found the net with a top corner finish. And within 3 minutes the score was four, and Shanahan had completed a personal hat-trick, as he used his speed down the left side to beat the defence and then poke the puck past an on rushing Silvester who came out of his net in an attempt to win the puck. Even a quick counter marker by Zak Dolphin at 26.23 was against the flow of play and barely took the Devils off stride, as 70 seconds later the lead was four goals again as hard fore checking pressure from the Devils allowed Alex Stanton Lewis to keep the puck in at the blueline, and Kieran Latchford set up Owen Griffiths at the back post with a blind back pass, for the simplest of finishes. Period ended 5-1 Devils

Swindon came out of the break quick and managed to peg the Devils back to 5-2 on the first shift, but the Devils settled and their fitness again showed in the final period as they really controlled the flow of the game. Swindon had changed netminders to Sabina Lossnitler who made several inspired saves to keep the score at 5-2 for most of the period, and really stopped the Devils getting the game finally settled. At 56.36 Cardiff finally found a way to beat her as again they scored two quick goals on one shift with Owen Griffiths hitting his third and fourth 21 seconds apart to wrap up a 7-2 win, and keep the Devils 100% start to the season going. Devils now sit in 1st spot after three games, and travel to Chelmsford next Saturday in a tough test.
