Slough Jets U18’s 0 – 3 Cardiff Devils U18’s
Sunday saw the Cardiff Devils U18s squad travel to Slough in the U18s “A” League South division, looking to bounce back following their first defeat of the season, the previous weekend in Guildford. The squad who have started the league campaign so strongly entered the match with a depleted squad with players missing through suspension, injury and sickness, and had to put together some new make shift lines.
The Devils however started the game brightly and from the first face-off played some attractive attacking hockey, with Owen Griffiths, Owen Bradshaw and Zak Shanahan moving the puck well and carving out some early opportunities only to find the Jets netminder Connor Garcia looking sharp, and producing several strong saves. The Devils second line of Giacomo Raffaelli, Tom Howells and Aaron Archer also started well, with Raffaelli breaking several times, causing problems for the home teams defence, but again unable to find the finish that would beat Garcia for the game opener. Slough are a physical team at home, and were trying to impose themselves upon their guests, but discipline let them down as they gave the Devils three Power Play advantages in the first 20 minutes. And the Cardiff Power Play looked sharp as they set up and moved the puck well, creating several great opportunities to again be thwarted by the netminding of Garcia, as both Joe Morris and Callum Buglass found time to shoot several shots from the point. At the other end the Devils finished the period on the end of some penalty trouble also, as they managed to find themselves killing a 5 on 3, giving Slough a two man advantage for over a minute. The Devils defence looked strong all game, and even on the penalty kill the Devils didn’t give up a clear cut opportunity and kept Slough to shots from distance, and with Ross Miller looking sharp in nets, the period ended 0-0 with both keepers looking strong.
The second period saw the Devils fly out of the gate, and start the scoring just 14 seconds in. The Devils still killing off a penalty from the end of the first forced a mistake from Slough in the neutral Zone and Owen Griffiths beat two Slough defensemen before beating the keeper 1 on 1 with a move to the backhand, and a calm finish to score a stunning goal and deflate the home team. It was the perfect start to the middle period, and a 20 minutes dominated by the Devils as they outshot there hosts 19-6. The Devils three lines were keeping the Jets pinned in their end for long spells, with some excellent for checking pressure. The third unit of Sam Bryant, Sam Edmonds and Teddy Perks came close to doubling the lead as they turned over a puck deep, only for a goal mouth scramble to be blown up early by the referee with the puck still loose. However the Devils were to extend the lead at 28.40, when Griffiths put Owen Bradshaw through, who cut across the goal and applied a neat finish through the netminders legs to make the score 2-0. Zak Shanahan came close to making it three on the next shift as he broke through the middle and took a slap shot that Garcia in goal got a piece of, only to see the puck squeeze out and roll just the wrong side of the post. At the other end the Devils defence of Joe Morris, Callum Buglass, Alex Stanton-Lewis and Krystof Gibbon were looking dominant and controlling play well. Slough were left to quick breaks and leaving players lurking High in the neutral zone trying to catch the Devils out, but to no avail. The Jets best chance of the period came on the Power-Play. After struggling to break out against the Devils PK, Slough finally got into the Devils zone and forced a great double save from Miller as both Kane Todd followed by Josh Ealey-Newman saw their efforts turned away.
Final period turned out to be the closest of the game. Slough came out hard in the
early minutes looking aggressive and throwing as many hits as they could, finishing everything. The Devils however looked unfazed, and again scored in the first minute, whilst a man short. Joe Morris broke up a Slough attack and set Owen Bradshaw breaking down the left wing. Bradshaw beat a defenseman for pace before cutting in and finishing across the keeper into the top left corner of the net for 3-0 and game over. The Devils defence kept things tight and again restricted Slough to chances from distance and from the boards as they looked to close out the win. The Devils did almost make it four, as Owen Griffiths weaved out of the corner before firing off the inside of the post and out. Ross Miller closed out the shut-out, the Devils second of the year, and a 3-0 win to keep the pressure up at the top of the table. The Devils U18s are now 7 wins from 8 games, and travel to Swindon next Saturday lunchtime.
