Cardiff Devils U18s 5 – 0 Peterborough Phantoms U18s

The Devils U18s squad entered this weekend game against rivals the Peterborough Phantoms on the back of a 100% start and four wins from four. Peterborough on the other hand have had a disappointing start, losing three from four, a real surprise from the squad that was league champions two seasons back. Games between these teams have always been hard fought and the Devils have yet to take home and away wins from the Phantoms in a season, and were looking to achieve this on the back of the opening days 7-4 win in the Phantoms rink.

The Devils squad started out fast and got the visitors on the back foot early, with Kieran Latchford forcing an early save from Sam James in the Peterborough goal. But the Phantoms had travelled with a small bench, and had a very set game plan to sit back with players behind the puck and stuck to it making it hard for the Devils to break down. And the visitors were picking their moments to attack and caught the Devils several times in the first period, with odd man rushes, that saw Ross Miller in the home goal called into action to keep it scoreless. The Devils who have been free scoring to date this season were getting frustrated by the Phantoms defence who were sticking to their task at hand with complete commitment, blocking several shots on goal, and then Sam James was in inspired form keeping out all pucks that were making it to him. The period ended 0-0 even with the shot count at 20-7 to the Devils.

The second period saw the Devils continue the siege on the visitors net, but with James still on top form. The first goal of the game was looming however, and the Devils finally found joy, when Callum Buglass kept a puck in and moved it to Latchford who found Owen Griffiths in front, who in turn finished calmly, ending the Phantoms resistance. This saw the start of the Devils best period of the game and more goals loomed. The Devils Power-Play has been in good form in recent games, and again found success with a Phantoms player in the box. Latchford was again provider as he again found a play open in the slot. This time it was Zak Shanahan who one timed the puck home to open up a 2-0 lead. The Devils now buoyed by two quick goals stepped up a gear and saw their forecheck cause problems for the Phantoms, forcing several turnovers. From one of these, Aaron Archer found himself in on goal and finished with a strong shot to make it 3-0 and start to make the game comfortable. The Devils finished the period with two goals in 22 seconds. First Callum Buglass again managed to keep a Phantoms clearance in at the blue line, and stepped in beating two player, before finding the killer pass to Tomas Howells, who finished for 4-0 and his first “U18A” league goal for the Devils squad. And then off a defensive face-off Owen Griffiths found Zak Shanahan breaking through the middle who raced away and finished for 5-0 at the end of the period.

The third saw the game get scrappy, and the Devils back to being frustrated on the attack. The home team however were keen to secure their first shut out of the year, and with Jamie Mcgirr taking over from Miller in nets set about a period of strong defence, keeping Peterborough to just 6 shots in the final 20 minutes. The defensive core of Joe Morris, Jack Randall, Callum Buglass, Alex Stanton-Lewis and Krystof Gibbon, controlled the Devils defence superbly and secured the 5-0 win and the first blank of the year for Miller and Mcgirr in nets. Final score 5-0, and the Devils extend
their start to five wins. Next up for the Devils is a top of the table battle with Bracknell at the BBT on the 17th November.
