Chelmsford Chieftains U18s 1 vs. 8 Cardiff Devils U18s
Saturday 13th saw the Devils U18s squad put their 100% start to the year to the test with a tough trip to Chelmsford to face the U18 Chieftains squad, who are always tough on home ice. The last two visits to the Chieftains home have seen the Devils squeeze two 2-1 victories in close physical affairs, and the Devils were expecting more of the same, but travelled full of confidence.
The match started at a fast pace with the visitors forcing the first save of the game from Adam Long in nets. Chelmsford were defending well but took an early penalty as Giacomo Raffaelli was hooked as he broke through the home defence. The Devils Power-Play set to work and looked strong all night. With great puck and player movement they carved out several opportunities with Owen Griffiths and Zak Shanahan both forcing good saves. Just as the penalty ended however a bad bounce saw the Chieftains presented with a 3 on 1 break, which was converted strongly by Lawrence Reffell to give the home team an early lead. The Devils bounced back strongly though and forced the tempo of the game with some flowing moves, and the pressure finally paid off. Owen Griffiths won a face-off and Zak Shanahan broke in from wide forcing a save which saw Griffiths dispatch the rebound on the back post to tie the game 1-1 at the first break.
The second period saw Devils team full of confidence and playing the best hockey of the year to date. At 21.32 the Devils took the lead. Excellent work from Kieran Latchford and Owen Griffiths saw another rebound presented for Shanahan to put home and start a run of six second period goals. The same line was on the score sheet again as Krystof Gibbon moved the puck to Latchford who put in an inch perfect pass for Shanahan at the back post to finish low. Ellis Price was next on the score sheet as he was put through by Giacomo Raffaelli to finish with a strong shot over the keepers shoulder. This was a Devils team in full flow and everyone was contributing, and fifth goal scored by the Devils 3rd line meant all three lines on the score sheet. Owen Bradshaw picking up a wide shot and jamming it home short side after hard work by Tom Howells and Teddy Perks. Finish of the night went to Raffaelli on the Devils 6th marker. This time Price provided the pass through and Raffaelli fired an inch perfect shot into the top corner leaving Long in the Chelmsford goal with no chance. Devils were rampant during a strong spell and had time for a 7th in the final seconds of the period. A chip of the boards set Shanahan and Griffiths free on a 2 on 1 break. Shanahan weighted a pass for Griffiths who sent the net minder the wrong way before finishing into an empty net calmly. A killer 20 minutes had all but sealed the points for the visiting Devils.
The third saw the Chieftains come out settled back down and re-focused on the game, and making the Devils battle for everything. Ross Miller took the final period in between the pipes for the Devils and was called into action straight away, producing the save of the game with a reaching toe on a shot destined for the net. The period saw the game get chippy and more physical as a few big hits started flying, resulting in several minor penalties. The Devils however were in no mood to pass up Power Play chances and scored their third Power Play goal late on. Latchford winning a face-off cleanly back to Jack Randall who, rounded off a very strong personal display with a bullet of a shot from the blue-line straight passed the net home minder to round off a highly impressive 8-1 win over a good Chelmsford side.
The Devils are now four wins from four, and have a weekend off, before returning to action at home to the Peterborough Phantoms U18s on Saturday 27th at 6.30pm.
