Blaze 2-5 Devils
22nd Feb 2010 | Posted by The-Inferno
In the latest encounter between the two teams, the Devils managed to come out on top and deny the Blaze 2 points which would have taken them further towards another league championship.
With some crazy February weather delaying faceoff until 8:30, the fans who didn't or couldn't make the game were eagerly anticipating this clash. When the game finally did faceoff just under an hour late it seemed that the Devils would be hit by penalty troubles again when Miller was called for interference just 1:26 into the opening period.
Unusually the Blaze powerplay seemed to be lacking in the first period as the Devils successfully killed the penalty and immediately began attacking in full force again. Just over 5minutes into the game and it was Miller on the gamesheet again as he notched up his first points of the night.
Blaze 0-1 Devils. Miller from Michel and Finnerty at 5:11.
With referee Hicks calling a raft of penalties over the course of the next 12minutes it was a surprise to many that neither team managed to find the back of the net, especially with the Devils killing off 1:39 of 5on3 in the Blazes favour. Just under 16minutes in and the first handbags were drawn when Robinson attacked Voth and was subsequently taken down. Voth receiving 5minutes for fighting whilst Robinson looking at 17mins of sin bin time ensured the Devils would have a 3on5 opportunity and they didn't disappoint when Jarvis found the back of the net with just 2 seconds remaining on the 3on5.
Blaze 0-2 Devils. Jarvis from Birbraer and Romfo at 17:26.
The end of the first period saw the Devils leading (rather surprisingly) by 2 goals and rather than looking tired in the 1st it was the Blaze who looked as if they'd been stuck on a bus for hours. Unfortunately the Devils were hit by early penalty trouble again in the 2nd period when Hartwick was called for delay of game at 20:27. Just 5seconds later and the Blaze had grabbed 1 goal back...
Blaze 1-2 Devils. Fulghum from Weaver and Carlson at 20:32.
A debatable late hit from Voth just 3minutes into the period saw Hicks bow to pressure from the Blaze bench and namely Paul Thompson when he called 5+game on Voth for a hit described by Cardiff arch-nemesis Dave Simms as perfectly good. With penalties dished out to both sides, Cardiff were left on the penalty kill and only 2minutes later Finnerty had joined the Devils sin bin contingent and the Blaze were left to score their 2nd of the evening.
Blaze 2-2 Devils. Lee from Cowley and Stewart at 27:20.
Towards end of the 2nd period the Blaze lost their cool as Miller collided with Hirsch in the Blaze nets, as Cruikshank took exception and punch Miller Hicks decided to penalise both players for roughing... After the real end of the period, all hell broke loose on the ice as Cruikshank and Campbell went ape and tried to fight anyone and everyone. Luckily this time Hicks called some decent penalties which saw the Blaze penalised well into the 3rd period.
Just under 4 minutes into the 3rd period and the Devils found the back of the net again to regain the lead whilst the Blaze still battled with penalty woes. Despite killing the 3on5 for 2mins, they couldn't handle another 2 minutes of pressure and Smith scores...
Blaze 2-3 Devils. Smith from Finnerty and Jarvis at 43:49.
50minutes into the game and the Devils have found the back of the net again. This time an assist is awarded to The-Inferno sponsored Matt Towe who along with Miller is enjoying a fine return to form.
Blaze 2-4 Devils. Hill from Towe and Latulippe at 50:59.
With the Devils taking a 2 goal lead into the final minutes of the game, a Devils penalty called against Hartwick at 58:49 for tripping sees the Blaze call a timeout and once over they emerge with 6 skaters and leave Hirsch on the bench, possibly where he belongs...
21 seconds later and the Devils have made it a 3 goal lead and their 4th win in a row...
Blaze 2-5 Devils. Jarvis from Romfo and Lyle at 59:10.
After conceding 5 goals and seeing Miller almost murder their netminder (or not) the Blaze dumb duo of Campbell and Cruikshank see fit to try and fight every Devils player on the ice, namely the legendary fighters that are Symonds and Richardson. With major penalties dished out - but later overturned by the joke that is the EIHL board - the game ends with the Devils winning 2-5.
Time to bring on the Capitals...
