Group A (Lausanne, Switzerland)
1 Canada
4 Czech Republic
5 Sweden
7 Germany
9 Slovakia
12 Denmark
14 Belarus
20 Great Britain

Group B (Zurich, Switzerland)
2 Russia
3 Finland
6 USA
8 Switzerland
10 Latvia
11 Norway
16 Italy
19 Kazakhstan

Notes:
A win against Belarus probably won’t be enough for GB to avoid relegation!
  1. Based on rankings, teams are assigned A, B, B, A, A, B, B, ...
  2. Germany / Switzerland switched, so that hosts play in the capital.
  3. Belarus (and Latvia) are hosts in 2021, so cannot be relegated.
  4. Relegation is the two lowest placed teams overall (excluding future hosts) ... and not simply last place in each group.
To avoid relegation and remain in the World Championship for 2021:
  • GB must to finish 6th in Group A, or ...
  • If only one of Belarus or Latvia finish bottom of their group:
    • GB must finish 7th in Group A, and ...
    • have a better overall record than 7th in Group B

When the 2021 games were awarded they were ranked 10th and 12th, and it probably wasn’t considered more than a mathematical possibility that they could actually drop out of the World Group.

Latvia were a pretty comfortable 5th in Group B and only just missed out on a Quarter-Final spot, so t’ll be a major shock if they get drawn in to a relegation battle in 2020. The possibility of Belarus being in a relegation scrap will probably hurt the chances of any of the smaller nations applying to host the tournament in future though.

Bottom line seems to be that you need to target a Top 12 finish and anything less than 2 regulation wins per tournament makes for a very uncertain future. 2 pts this year was good enough for 13th place, so it’s certainly possible GB could survive with only 1 win...
