With Glasgow’s final trip to South Wales of the season, a win for the Devils will mean they are locked-in to a 4th place finish in the league and home advantage over their upcoming play-off quarter-final opponents.
Cardiff cannot now finish 3rd after Nottingham’s win on Wednesday night.
A Cardiff win will also mean Cardiff cannot then face Glasgow in the quarter-finals as Glasgow wouldn’t then be able to finish above 6th.
And if Cardiff win on Saturday (and/or Sunday), and Nottingham beat Guildford on Saturday night, and if Coventry beat Glasgow on Sunday evening, Devils and Blaze will then be locked in as quarter-final opponents by the end of this weekend allowing them to publish the fixture dates and start selling tickets.
To Friday’s game, the season series between the clubs is 3-2-0 in Cardiff’s favour. Clan won the last game between the clubs 4-1 last month as well as the last game played between the sides in Cardiff in November.
Cardiff have scored 14 goals from 171 SoG (8.19% scoring rate) and Glasgow have scored 13 goals from 167 SoG (7.78% scoring rate).
Starting on time seems important as in this series the team that has scored first in each game has gone on to win 4 out of the 5 games.
Mac Carruth has served his suspension and is back in training but apparently won’t play in this game, so the start goes to either Ben Bowns (2-0-0 and 70 saves from 72 shots (97.22%) against Glasgow this season) or Taz Burman (0-1-0 and 33 saves from 36 shots (91.67%) against Glasgow).
Devils time-on-ice leader in this series is Gleason Fournier (20 min 53 secs per game) but he won’t play either due to his injury.
Of all Cardiff’s 59 blocked shots in the series Cody Donaghey has blocked 15% of them.
The Clan edge the face-off series leaving Devils with a 47.7% face-off win rate.
Josh MacDonald leads the shots on goal total with 21, and he is our top goal scorer in this series with 4 goals. He has also scored points in every one of the 5 games in the series so far. Zach O’Brien is the only other player to put up points in each of the 5 games and he leads the team in points with 8 – all of them assists (4 on the powerplay).
We only average 5.6 PiMs per game (14 minor penalties) that have given Clan 12 powerplay opportunities – they’ve converted just 1 so Devils PK rate is 91.67%. Devils have had 16 powerplays and converted 4 for a 25% success rate.
The series had been tight all year and this is further reflected with the Clan being in the lead for 83 minutes and 53 seconds of game time played, whereas the Devils have led for 85 minutes and 37 seconds – just 1 minute 44 seconds more. The remaining 130 minutes and 30 seconds played have been tied.
Let’s hope we don’t pick up any more injuries.
