In the list of current members browsing the forum there is often a listing for Yahoo (Bot)....

Why?

The bots browse the forum so they can index pages for their respective search engines. There is a google bot, a msnBot ect. They have their own log in to the forum by default with the software so that we can control what they are allowed and not allowed to see of the site. Keeps them in check and stops them being naughty if neccesary.

aren't they often called spiders that search the web to make it easier and faster when we search on google etc? someone sign them up think how quick and skilled an 8 legged player would be

They are usually called Web crawlers. The method they use to search the web is called 'Spidering'.
