Cardiff Bay Toys R Us store site 'to become beach'

A "beach-style leisure destination" could be brought to Cardiff after the council successfully bid for land previously used by Toys R Us.

The toy retailer announced it was going into administration on 27 February and Cardiff Council has agreed to take back the lease of the Cardiff Bay store.

The beach idea forms part of a £240m redevelopment scheme at the International Sports Village.

The proposal will be debated by cabinet on 15 March.

Cardiff council already owns the freehold to the four-acre site and leases it to Toys R Us, but the company is considering the closure of some or all of its stores after going into administration.​

Hang om, the last time i looked I'm sure we already have a natural beach down the bay. Ok admittedly its brown, sludgy, you sink in it and instead of shells its shopping trolleys but natural all the same

If the council owns the freehold and Toys R Us are in breach of its lease such that the council can take it back what are they bidding for - are they simply paying themselves

Whatever, more attractions in an area which has inadequate car parking all ready. Let's hope that in any development the council change the habits of a lifetime and make proper car parking a condition of development and then enforce it

If the council do take over the lease then maybe they will aĺlow parking there for game nights until any development takes place.
