Guess why IAW cancelled junior hockey?

6000 youngsters (9-17) and their parents, experience a well presented series of events put on by the people involved with our club and you think none are going to come and take a visit to see the Devils. Really. Don`t let your annoyance get in the way of the facts either. Reduced icetime for one week will not alter or define how a child will perform in his or her team over the season.

Missing 66% of that weeks training a wek before a game with only a weeks notice isnt on. I agree that IAW have done wll with the eventv but the way the juniors have been treated is not fair.

Also I stand by what I say, watching netball in a room where the ice or plexi isnt there will not in my opinion encourage anyone to watch hockey. If you went to watch hockey on a tempoary rink in the cardiff city stadium, would you then start going to watch football there as well? Its just a facility, there would be no feel for the actual sport itself

It's more likely to encourage ice skating than watch a hockey game. As a multi use arena it's likely to be used more and more within the mid week and possibly weekends in the coming years,it has to to be able to survive.

I am not saying that commercially it has been a success for IAW, but I dont believe that netball fans will now watch hockey because they visited a rink with no ice or plexi. Also I still think the treatment of the juniors is shoddy. We reguarly miss ice time for other events but 2 sessions in 1 week with a weeks notice is wrong

With the current decor and lack of promotion of the Devils in the IAW it would be unlikely anybody would be tempted to a Devils game.

Now play some Devils promo on screens, decorate the area, sports themed bar, yes you could attract people.

I'm disappointed that the netball court has no decals on it, having seen previous games the court has promo decals on it, why there is none with even the IAW logos etc l assume it's time and cost related. Again poor understanding of the business potential and a lack of any attempt to gain future business.

Great to see Devils game night team supporting this event but what will they do tonight? Webcadt on the gsntry or just cut and run to Shooters. I sudpect the former - they are pros.

As to Junior Devils missing ice time I have seen no complaints that the Devils trained on the small pad yesterday.

My 2p worth on this is; this event brings in more revenue for IAW. Which means IAW makes a step towards actually making money.

If IAW actually starts making money, there is a bigger chance the Calgary 4 will be able to buy it. I've been told before now that the reason they have not bought the rink yet, is because IAW were making it tough for them by not handing over the books, and then when they did, the bank Steve King et al we're going to, to get the capital to buy the rink, laughed in their faces due to how badly IAW is doing. Meaning they cannot but it right now.

How true this all is, I do not know. But it did come from someone within the Devils organisation.

So in summary, this is a step towards IAW making money, which is a step towards the Devils owning the rink.

So not all as doom and gloom in the long term. Right now though, worst planning ever on everyone's part.

Would have been nice maybe to give the juniors a bit of notice so they could maybe have the option of a session or two on the small pad?

Although the little bit i caught of the netball last night made the arena look amazing, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and it would be nice for the arena to establish itself as a sports venue not just an ice rink.

If the IAW is not covering it's running costs, Greenbank won't want to loose money on it, it'll get taken back by the council, they may want to dump it.

If the Devils cannot raise funds to buy it, that's an issue, a big one, as Mr King is a former investment banker who current business specialise in securing funds to businesses that have growth potential but that banks won't loan money to. I'm shocked if that information is correct.

I never said not covering running costs. Just that it wasn't doing so well compared to how it may have been predicted.

I assumed that based on the information, it's not attracted much in the way of new events, the Hockey is not paying for use and the skaters not exactly queuing out the door. The cafe would need to be selling a lot to support the business.

To run an arena with those costs, the lack of investment in infrastructure, development and PR I'm assuming very little is left every month, in fact I'd be surprised if anything.

For someone of Steve's business calibre to approach a bank and be declined funding is worrying.

If the IAW was making a profit, combined with Steve's business abilities, could show potential growth, add security to cover the loan, l don't know Canadian banking business, but in the U.K. I'd be shocked if a bank declined funding on it.

I also posted recently that there is currently a loan secured on the IAW building, fixtures and fittings taken out by the directors of Greenbank in June 2016.

So it's not impossible as most UK lenders will loan against an asset.

It also makes little sense for the Devils to buy the rink unless Greenbank are desperate to sell and give a great price, or the rink puts the Devils business model in danger.

If the Devils buy the rink the free ice time agreement is gone. Something has to fund the purchase right?

Once demand for tickets is high, game night prices would likely increase.

At that point it's likely a purchase of the IAW would be reality, Greenbank are unlikely to turn the IAW around without a significant change in the running of the arena. The purchase of the IAW would likely see the IAW and the Devils businesses being operated independently. The Devils business would simply pay the company set up to control the IAW for ice time, that would increase the profitability of the IAW immediately. Would also likely be shown in the business plan prior to purchase of the IAW, making it a more viable business.
